Everyone takes photos at some time or another so why not take the best photos possible? Here are some quick and easy tips that will help you get the right photo when that moment comes. Continue reading →

Here are some tips to make your photo taking better. Most people never bother to take the time to learn a bit about basic photography so the pictures they take are really terrible. The good news is with the advent of digital photography we can now see the result of our picture taking almost instantly. This is really great because we have another chance to take a photo of a once in a lifetime event. Here are some tips that based on my experience will help most beginners out there.

Beginning Photography Tips #1 – Buy the right camera for the job

Many people make the mistake of buying the wrong camera for their needs. Consider some basic criteria which will make the decision easier. Are you a point and shoot person? Do you need a camera that takes great pictures out of the box without adjusting anything? Finding a camera that needs little or no adjustment is important if you just want to press the shutter button and nothing else. Also, what size prints do you normally make? If you normally just make 4×6 prints then anything above 4 megapixel will do just fine. Consider the speed of the camera. Do you take pictures at sporting events? If you do, you need a camera that boots up fast and has a very low shutter lag.

Beginning Photography Tips #2 – Compose the photo

How many times do we need to see a photo of someone’s face with the top of their head cut off? Really, centering a person’s face in the picture does not a portrait make. Take the time to compose your picture. Off center photos have more interest. If you subject is so small that you need a magnifying glass to pick them out in the scene, you should have zoomed in a little more. You can also experiment with camera angles. Take a picture from above or below the subject for an interesting twist. Use you judgment here because you don’t want to shoot a picture angled down your girlfriend’s mother’s dress!

Beginning Photography Tips #3 – Use both hands to stabilize the camera

I can’t stress this enough! Every single time I go to one of our kid’s events, I see some parent waving their camera with one hand and shooting pictures like there’s no tomorrow. Here’s a news flash: those pictures will really be out of focus. It is bad enough having poor indoor lighting; using one hand and shaking the camera makes it ten times worse. Use both hands to keep the camera steady especially if there is not enough light.

Beginning Photography Tips #4 – Don’t shoot pictures with the light behind your subject

Yes, everyone does this at one time or another. If your boyfriend is standing in front of the window and you take a photo, all you are going to get is a dark outline. The light source should be behind you, not behind your subject. You can compensate by using the flash fill function of your camera. You get better results if you just make sure the light source is behind you.

Well that’s all we have time for. I hope you enjoyed some of my beginning photography tips. For more information and articles relating to photography and digital cameras, please visit out site. Thanks for reading and good luck shooting.

Want to know how to get started with digital photography, but don’t know how? Here are a few Photography Tips to get you started.

Photography Tip # 1: What equipment do you need to get started?

The first thing you need to do when starting out as a photographer is do an equipment check. What type of things will you need to do photography as a hobby or professionally? If you are just starting out and doing photography as a hobby, you probably don’t need much.

Here is a list of things you may need as a hobbyist:

Quality, but less expensive Digital Camera, at least 4-6 mega-pixels. (Check out Sony Digital Cameras)

A memory card. (You can find these cheep 512MB or 1G is the standard)

A camera bag, for extra items; lens cleaner, lens brush, filters, extra memory cards, etc.

A small tripod. (Totally optional unless you plan on doing a ton of knight photography)

A computer or photo printer

Software for digital imaging (Usually you get a free program with your camera software)

For professionals you may need a few more things:

High-end digital camera 6 mega-pixels or higher (Check out Canon, Sony Cyber-shot series, or Nikon)

A memory card that holds 1-2 GB of images. This will allow you to have a couple 100 images on the highest quality settings.

A lighting kit (Check out eBay, there are some really great deals)

Reflectors (Again, eBay has loads of this type of stuff)

A good high-power flash. I bought a Canon 550EX a few years ago and it is still going strong.

A few photography books on Lighting Setup and Working with Models.

A studio to shoot or a couple good outdoor locations. (Studios can range from $500 to $2000 a day)

A computer with lots of storage. I use a 300GB external hard-drive.

Professional imaging software like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Photography Tip # 2: Getting to Know Your Camera

With just the basics you can get started in a matter of minutes. I highly recommend you read the manual that came with your camera before you start taking photos. Some digital cameras are not user-friendly and can be tricky. Generally when you are beginning, you can use the automatic settings that your camera provides. The auto settings are usually on a dial on the upper right-hand side of your camera on most consumer based cameras.

The most common auto-setting options are:

Close-ups

Portraits

Landscapes

Action

Slow Shutter

Bright Light

Refer to your camera manual for what each of these settings do. Once you understand the auto settings and feel comfortable going into manual mode, your camera will have settings for this also. Once in manual mode you will need to understand how to set your aperture and shutter speed. This will be important for correct exposure. Generally in low light settings you should use a slower film speed. Most digital cameras these days have settings for your ISO. This is your film speed. In low light you should set your camera to 200 or lower if your camera is capable of doing so. This will ensure the least amount of grain in the final photo. In brighter settings you can set your ISO to 400 or above. If you are shooting action shots like sports, you may want to try out higher settings like 800 ISO. This will ensure you capture the action.

Photography Tip #3: What to take pictures of?

When starting out, it is good practice to take photos of things around the house. I suggest using a variety of objects, with different size, color and shape. I’ve even gone to yard sales and picked up interesting vases, antiques, old books, dolls, and much more. Fruit is also an easy subject because there are so many varieties and colors. Once you have a decent amount of objects to practice with, try making some nice arrangements. Once you are satisfied, setup your camera on a tripod or hand-held is okay as well. Don’t worry about lighting at this point, just make sure you have enough light to see the setup well enough. Position yourself about 3-5 feet away from you subject. Try taking a few photos at several different angles.

Here are a few angles to try:

Close-up

Medium zoom

No Zoom

Bird’s eye view (high and angled

Straight on( directly toward center with no angle)

From the Left

From the Right

From the bottom looking up (ant’s eye view)

Rotate your camera 90 degrees

Rotate your camera to 45 degrees (straight by slightly turned)

Zoom in to an object, but focus on the background

Zoom into an object, but focus on the foreground

Zoom into an object, and focus on the object.

Doing these actions will help you become more familiar with your camera and help you begin to understand how to be more creative with your shots. If you don’t feel like taking photos of garage sale junk or fruit, try going outside and doing the same exercise with natural objects. If you have an animal, cat, dog, or bird, you can do the same with them. Pets are great because when they move around, it will train your skills to be quicker. If they are more casual and sit still, it allows you to experiment a bit more with your camera angles and settings.

Photography Tip #4: Lighting your subject.

To impress anyone with a photograph, make sure you have good lighting. There is nothing worse than taking a family photo only to have shadows on everyone’s faces, or dark spots under their eyes from improper lighting. If you have a basic consumer camera, the flash isn’t that powerful and usually only works for closer images. Your flash may work better in darker settings, but during the day most basic built-in flashes are not capable of removing shadows from over 7 feet away. The best way to avoid heavy shadows is to be aware of the time of day if you are shooting outside. Time of day and lighting can vary per state and country, but generally at high noon the sun is the highest in the sky, so that means your subjects will be lit from directly above. This causes harsh shadows in the eye sockets and under the nose. It’s generally not an attractive look. Late at night with a basic flash is not the most pleasant thing either because it is straight on. Your subjects will have the “Deer in the Headlights” look, not so good either. The best way to avoid these situations is put yourself in the place of the subject. How would you want to look? Like a superstar, right?

The best times to shoot photos of people are late in the afternoon when the sun is warm, glowing and almost down. In California where I am at, this is usually around 4 or 5pm. If you are an early bird, you can get up early in the morning as the sun begins to rise, you can get the same soft glowing effect. If you don’t have a choice, and you have to shoot in the middle of the day try to find a good shady spot for your subjects. If it is a tree you find, ensure there are not any random bits of light sneaking through the leaves onto your subjects face. Having blotchy shadows on your face is not attractive either. If you are taking photos of people, try to get close enough that your flash does work. Most people like upper body to close-up shots anyway. A good way to get better with your lighting is to buy a foam head. You can get these online and sometimes at wig shops if they have extras. This way you have a foam person to practice with and won’t insult anyone. You don’t have to get a fancy kit for this. Grab a couple lamps from around the house and position them a bit differently around the subject to find the most attractive light.

Photography Tip #5: Focus is key to good photography.

Have you ever seen a photo that could have been really great, but the focus was all wrong? Bad focus is fairly common and sometimes completely ignored. There is nothing worse than a really good photo with bad focus. You may not know this but focusing on the right subject in a photo can dramatically change the emotion of the photo. When you are getting ready to fire your camera, stop and think about what you are actually trying to capture. Have you ever tried to take a photo of a beautiful forest only to find out in the actual photo it just looks like a pile of sticks?

Or maybe you have tried to take a picture of a friend in a crowded place and they don’t even stand out. Focus is a major part of the photo and should be carefully crafted like the rest of the photo. When shooting photos of people, you can zoom in about 30 or 40% and get in a little closer, about 3-5 feet away. This will cause the background to blur a bit, making the focus on the subject. If you are standing too far away and do not zoom, the entire composition will be in focus. Depth of field is important. You want your photos to have a foreground, mid-ground and background. You won’t always have a foreground especially if you are doing close-up photos, but making sure your background and subject are clearly defined.

It is important that Wedding Photographers come to offer services with the latest photography equipment. A wedding photography company is measured by many factors, factors that include great service and support, before the wedding, during the wedding celebration and after the wedding. Then there are great prices and packages offered by the wedding photography company. The packages that are offered determine the way that you will choose a wedding photography company however, another very important factor to consider is the type of equipment that a wedding photography firm uses.

Using the latest technology and equipment epitomizes the status symbol of a wedding photography company. The reason that is distinguishes it from many other companies that they are competing with so many photography firms shooting wedding in Destin, Florida, it is a big opportunity to maximize off, the attitude that many firms have it to jump in quickly and hustle bride and grooms to be by luring them at wedding shows, the internet and by handing out flayers on vehicles in banquet hall parking lots. However, choosing to have the latest in photography camera equipment and the latest in software technology to edit the wedding photos separates a Destin wedding photography firm from a pack of companies that simply feel that all that is required is a camera and the ability to take a picture.

Don’t get us wrong, there is a lot that is required in taking a proper photo, things like the proper angles of a profile, proper lighting and many other factors that go into taking proper wedding photos. However, those things are all learned through photography experience; however, the one thing that differentiates one photography firm from the pack is knowing and understanding that the latest in photography equipment plays a vital role. Then there are companies willing to invest in the latest technology and/or equipment, seeing a company willing to purchase the newest photography camera is an indication that they understand what it takes to do a great job and is something that should be investigated by a bride and groom to be in search of a beach wedding photography company in Florida.

So in conclusion, choosing a company is a wise choice because, with so much to choose from, and with competition so fierce in N.W Florida Wedding Photography industry, doing your research on which wedding photography offers the best price, gives you the best services possible throughout your wedding day celebration and seeing which company uses the best and greatest technology the shoot wedding pics for their clients. So whenever you have the fortunate task of being lucky enough to begin the search for a wedding photographers firm in Destin for your beach wedding, consider the option of asking a wedding photography firm of the equipment they use and see if it is the latest and greatest available. It is a decision that you will look back on and be happy with.

Photography interest is wide, but having the ability to capitalize on the photos you take by finding financial gain is rare. The photographer’s inability to market photos to clients or quite often their inexperience are the leading causes for this rare occurrence. A great way to capitalize on the photographer’s life is to seek the advice of experience and search for landscape photography tips online. Landscape photography is one of the most sought after types of photography currently affecting the photo market and finding landscape photography tips can help turn your mediocre skills into the skills of an expert.

When researching landscape photography tips to pursue the photographer’s life one of the top tips is to find a new perspective to an old photo. Photographs often in high demand include images of national treasures and monuments where companies are seeking a new angle or perspective of the aged image.

Visiting these popular hot spots can help you capitalize financially as you discover the new angles or perspectives that purchasing companies are seeking. In many cases a new angle can capture shadowing or a background that is relevant to the original image, strengthening the imagery of the photograph. When pursuing the photographer’s life remember to take a great deal of photographs at a variety of angles since you never know which photo will appeal directly to your potential client.

It is important to identify the various patterns of tip familiarity when searching for landscape photography tips due to their great abundance on the internet. Remember when trying to find the character of a photo that a great deal of importance should be placed upon the play of light and shadow. The time of day plays a tremendous role in the imagery that can be found in a photo. Never find satisfaction with the first photo you take when deciding on a area to photograph. Photographing various shadows, play of clouds and revealed location images can on occasion take the length of a day and play a large role in the photographer’s life. Patience in photography can help in capitalizing on discovered landscape photography tips to maximize your photography earnings.

Nature is unpredictable in regards to the conditions that are available to the photographer. One of the top landscape photography tips is to find new perspectives when nature thwarts your original effort. Close a single eye to assist in finding the new scene you hope to capture. This method will help you see how the flat image of the photo will develop as closing an eye reduce the depth that dual vision provides. If you hope to take a photo of majestic mountains but the shadowing is wrong then use that background to capture the beauty of a new feature. On many occasions the beauty of a single flower stands out the most with bleak surroundings. Maximize your experiences in the photographer’s life by seeking new perspectives and never to accept photographic failure.

Taking digital wedding photographs can be much different from taking pictures with a standard camera. You will have a number of advantages available; however, there are also other considerations that must be made. Below you will find digital wedding photography tips to help guide you through the process.

Digital Wedding Photography Tips #1: Getting the Shot without Disturbing the Service

One of the most important digital wedding photography tips that should be observed is how to make sure you achieve the shot without actually disturbing the ceremony. First, you should always make sure the sound on your camera is turned off.

Nothing disturbs a ceremony more than the sound of a digital camera. In addition, make sure you time your movements with other activity during the ceremony so that you can achieve the boldness you need to get the right shot without being obtrusive.

Digital Wedding Photography Tips #2: Being Prepared

Being prepared when taking wedding photographs is always important but it is even more so when using a digital camera. You will need to make absolutely sure you have an adequate number of batteries. Batteries tend to drain quickly and you do not want to find that your battery has run out of power before the end of the event.

Memory is also another critical element that should be observed. Make sure you bring enough memory cards with you.

Digital Wedding Photography Tips #3: Types of Photos

Ideally, you should go over the shot list with the bride and groom ahead of time. You can always provide a shot list to the couple and allow them to add or subtract the types of formal group shots they want taken. Candid shots are always popular for weddings. Both photos taken before the ceremony as well as during the reception can provide an excellent opportunity for natural, candid shots.

When you are working on the shot list with the couple is an excellent time to have them review some of your prior work. This can help to manage expectations and ensure the couple knows what to expect from your work. Of course, you should always have a signed contract to make sure all contingencies are covered in the event something does not go as planned.

Digital Wedding Photography Tips #4: Choosing your Equipment

A tripod can come in quite handy when shooting digital wedding photography because it allows you to set-up and maintain the shot with perfection. In addition, you should also make sure you bring along your extra flash just in case you need it. Try to predict in advance what kind of equipment and lenses you need, if possible by visiting the location before the wedding.

Digital Wedding Photography Tips #5: Editing

Digital wedding photography provides you with the unique advantage of being able to correct or enhance the photos after the fact. You can crop them in order to remove elements that are distracting or you can correct red-eye. These benefits allow you to focus more on capturing the image with the knowledge that you can always touch it up later through the editing process.

Digital Wedding Photography Tips #6: File Formats

When using a digital camera there are a number of different formats that can be used. RAW is one of the best formats due to the fact that this format allows you to manipulate the photos after they have been taken. It does require additional processing time; however, the benefit of being able to manipulate white balance and exposure can be well worth it for wedding photographs.

JPG allows you to achieve very high image quality along with good compression ratios. This is something that GIF is not able to do.

Even though JPG is a good compromise between file size and quality I would advise you to use RAW file format for all your digital wedding photography. The reason is the flexibility RAW format provides to adjust exposure and white balance.

You generally won’t get a second chance to shoot wedding photographs and using RAW file format provides can help you recover otherwise hopeless photographs.

This can make the difference between a very satisfied or dissatisfied couple.

It is always very important to look out for any digital photography hints and tips. Some people can literally take fabulous photographs without really trying, but the majority of us need whatever help we can get to make our photographs look professional.

It may appear daunting to think that you can, quite easily take on board a few of the professional photographers digital photography tips and hints to turn your photographs into those of a pro. The truth is, you can and it does not take much.

Lets Take a Look at Some of the Main Digital Photography Tips and Hints:

Portraits

The key to taking better portrait photographs and the number one digital photography tips and hints is that of keeping things simple. You do however need to plan what you are doing.

If you are going to take a photograph of a couple as a portrait, don’t just get them to face the camera and hope for the best. Try to get them to look at each other, or get one to give the other a ‘playful’ kiss on the cheek.

This also applies to family portraits. One of the best digital photography tips and hints is to have one of the parents swinging their child above their head in a playful manner. Or try mom and dad to hold the child’s hand as they walk towards you. These tips and hints will ensure that the photograph appears natural and will produce excellent results.

Other recognized digital photography tips and hints are to get your ‘subjects’ out of the somewhat drab studio and use different and natural settings. If they have a pet dog or cat, get them to hold it or include it in the photograph. If they have just passed their driving license, get them to stand in front of their car with their new license.

Digital photography tips and hints for Landscapes

If you are like me and really enjoy taking pictures when you’re on vacation or traveling, you may wonder how to make these professional landscape photographs. There are some very quick and easy ways to do this.

First, take a closer look at what you are about to take a photograph of before you take the picture. One of the best digital photography tips and hints is to look at the colors. If it is a bright blue lake against a blue sky, then there may be too much blue! Wait just a short while, or come back when the sun is about to set and snap a photo of the sunset against the blue lake

Good digital photography tips and hints for landscapes and any other type of photographs include being aware of how the same color is going to actually translate on a photo, regardless of how breathtaking it may be in person.

If you are going to take a photo of the autumn foliage, avoid a picture of just a bunch of trees all at the same height. Again, it will probably result in just a jumble of all the same colors. Adjust your angle so as to get a hill or part of a field in the picture so as to break up all that color.

Basic Digital photography tips and hints

Remember to always try different angles when taking your photos. It may be your only chance to capture that picture, so make it your best. The top digital photography tips and hints are to:

Move your main subject to the right or to the left in order to break up the monotony of a straight shot.

Always be aware of the lighting around your subject as well; try it from behind, above, or below in order to get the best pose and shot.

We see them all over the place; in television advertisements, in magazines, and on the runway. They are the beautiful men and women who strut their stuff while showing off the latest styles from the hottest fashion designers. These are the fashion models of today and tomorrow, and the subject of high fashion photography. It is through photography that these models and fashionable clothing are brought to the public. Therefore, these photographs must be taken with a certain level of precision and a special attention to color, style, and lighting composition. Learning a few key fashion photography tips will help to make this possible.

High fashion photographers such as Mario Testino and Eva Mueller may not be as famous as the models they shoot, but they are actually sought out more than their model counterparts by fashion magazines and designers. While the dream of huge paychecks and hobnobbing with the rich and famous might appeal to the aspiring fashion photographer, it is not easy to become successful in fashion and model photography. For every one talented young photographer who makes it big, there are hundreds are left dreaming about the moment their photo will be chosen.

Here are a few fashion photography tips for anyone interested in getting started in the field of fashion photography. The first thing you must do is study your subject. As with any field, you can never learn enough. Read as many fashion magazines you can possibly get your hands on. There are a number of fantastic books on the subjects of fashion and model photography available. They can be purchased cheaply online at sites like Amazon.com or even cheaper if you get them used on eBay. You will also need a good camera, a tripod, and a lighting system. One of the more often overlooked fashion photography tips, is to ensure that you always have plenty of film and extra batteries available.

One of the most important fashion photography tips to focus on is having a portfolio. You need to start assembling a portfolio of your work and you need to keep this portfolio handy at all times. You never know when you will have the opportunity to show your work off to someone in the fashion world. Sharp, vibrant images on a 4 x 5″ transparency will best show off your work, so focus on them when putting your fashion photography portfolio together. If any of your work has already been published regardless of whether it was a local magazine, newspaper or contest, add a tear sheet (literally a sheet you torn out of the magazine) is a great addition to a portfolio. You should have a minimum of 20 photographs in your portfolio and showcasing different styles.

In this day of the internet, it is wise to display your fashion photography talent online as well. Setup a simple website displaying your work and submit your digital photos to online contests. Also, submit them to online fashion gallery websites. This will help tremendously with getting your work seen and showcasing your talent around the world. Probably the most important of all the fashion photography tips is to get your photographs seen by as many people as possible. There is no better way of doing this than by putting them online.

Remember that most fashion magazine editors are looking for your personality in the photographs that you take. Each fashion photographer will captures the essence of a fashion design and model differently. Most importantly, if this is your dream, do not give up, ever! Keep learning the latest high fashion photography tips and keep working to get your photographs on the cover of my next hot fashion magazine.

If you are trying to capture professional athlete action on camera, you don’t want to end up being frustrated when the pictures don’t turn out so well. If you are confused and wonder why your sports photography is not so hot, don’t get worried.
As beginners, most professional sport photographers make common mistakes while shooting triathlon, basketball, body building, National Basketball League or any other form of commercial athlete photography.

Commercial advertising sport photography is not easy for anyone. Even sports photography experts find it difficult to shoot the action live and get it right. To get better pictures, you can take help from several tips.

1.	The first thing to be considered while shooting pictures of professional athletes is that not all your pictures will come out perfect. Sometimes, you make take 400 shots and only 40 may turn out to be excellent. Don’t despair if that happens while you are learning sports photography or commercial advertising athlete photography. Use a digital camera while capturing photos of a basketball game or triathlon event. This way, you won’t be wasting expensive film while learning commercial athlete photography or shooting professional athlete action.

2.	Always remember that fast paced sports are best photographed with a lot of light. You may face problems getting good pictures of an indoor basketball game or bodybuilding competition. In that case, make sure that your camera has a string flash. Usually, point and shot digital cameras don’t have string flash, making it tough to get clear professional sport pictures.

3.	Try to get closer to the subject of your photograph. If you’re at a basketball game or watching a triathlon, see if you can stand at the edge of the court or maybe right behind the basket. Don’t forget to set your camera on sports mode and ensure that your flash is turned on. These are the best settings for the available lighting conditions.

4.	For outdoor commercial athlete photography, you don’t have to worry about light. More the sunlight available while taking pictures, better will be the possibility of stopping the action in your pictures. Just put your camera into sports mode and wait for the game to get more exciting so that you can capture the best moments. At times, professional athlete action may seem too far away from you. Wait for some time as the play comes closer and you get the right shots.

5.	Focus on the distance of your subject from your position while learning commercial advertising athlete sport photography. If you are shooting in bright sunlight, you can still use the camera’s flash for short distances. If a bodybuilding contest or National Basketball League game is taking place a few feet away from you, you can easily take good photographs of the action.

6.	Catching the action in sports photography requires you to control the shutter speeds of your camera. Usually, a shutter speed of at least 1/500 or more is good enough for shooting professional athlete pictures.
By following these guidelines, you can get some great action shots and enjoy commercial advertising sport photography too.

Digital Photography Tips – The Big Five Of Digital Photography

Digital Photography Tip One – Busting The Dust:

Digital SLRs with removable lenses are prone to dust landing on the sensor. Static electricity around the sensor can possibly contribute to attracting dust particles, or other elements to this sensitive area of your camera.

To get rid of the dust you can use a camera blower brush, and tilt the camera down while blowing. Take care not to get any of the hairs snagged inside!

Digital Photography Tip Two – Shedding Light On The Night:

For night photography using only a flash can leave you with a well exposed – but isolated – subject against a dark background. Most digital cameras nowadays have a slow-sync flash feature, which combines the short flash exposure with a proper exposure for the rest of the background. On a camera such as the Olympus SP500, this feature is a preset mode called “Night Portrait”.

To ensure expert nighttime shooting, a good digital photography tip is to look for a digital camera with the following features: shutter speed of up to 30 seconds; shutter priority mode; manual ISO settings at least to 400; slow-sync shutter mode.

Digital Photography Tip Three – Nit-Picking About Pixels:

When buying a digital camera you will be confronted with a vast choice of various megapixel specifications. It is worth knowing that not all pixels are created equal!

Some cameras have more pixels crammed onto the same sensor size as another model. More pixels in this case means smaller, and therefore less effective pixels. In this situation the camera with fewer pixels on a similar-sized sensor, might actually produce better images all round.

Digital Photography Tip Four – Spice Up Your Space:

With digital photography you will find yourself taking more pictures – and chances – than ever before, without the worry of the cost of failure. However, that means you will need a lot of digital storage space, especially if you are diligent about making backup copies of your best work.

If you’re doing out-of-town nature photography, a digital photography tip to keep in mind is to make sure you take along enough storage devices, such as a laptop, DVD’s, and external hard drives. RAW images can quickly get you into storage problems!

Digital Photography Tip Five – Remember To Flash:

For great outdoor portraits, make sure you use your digital camera’s fill flash, or flash on mode. Don’t wait for the camera to decide whether or not the flash is necessary. It might decide that there is generally enough outdoor light.

The fill flash mode will ensure proper exposure for the background and enough flash to expose the subject in the foreground, leaving you with a professional looking portrait.

Lastly, remember that, if someone offers expert advice, they may expect a generous digital photography tip!

Black and white photography is a number of monochrome forms in visual art. Monochrome comes from the Greek monochromos meaning “of one color”, which is a combination of monos, meaning “alone” or “solitary” and chroma meaning “color”. Quite basic when you break it down!

For Many decades black and white photography dominated the scene until color was introduced. From the 16th century when the brightness and clarity of camera obscures was improved by enlarging the hole with a telescope lens until now, we still admire the purity of black and white photography. It was not until the 17thCentury, 1727 to be exact, when Professor J. Schulze mixed chalk, nitric acid, and silver in a flask, that the first photosensitive compound was created. And in 1816 Nicéphore Niépce combines the camera obscure with photosensitive paper and created a permanent image in 1826.

In the past black and white dominated the media. Movies, television and even computers, were all monochrome. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that color photography became popular.

Choosing a subject is essential for this type of photography, more so than choosing a subject for color photography. While some subjects can look amazing in color, they often look dull in black and white. Black and white photography is both the simplest and most sophisticated of all the photography disciplines. It is, honest, fresh, crisp and clean and can result in the most powerful imagery. Capitalizing on its popularity, black and white photography holds its own when it comes to photographic exhibitions. Such powerful imagery can be timeless and compelling at the same time. It captures emotions, impressions, and atmosphere that depict nostalgia in a dramatic way.

In black and white photography, you will need to consider the exposure, your background, making sure that the subject is well back lit and that it does not distract from your subject. Lights and shadows are also important. For example, when you strip an image of its color, you are left with the strictly light and shadows and subtle tones of grey. To experiment with this, you could shoot at different times during the day, that way you will learn the importance of light and shadows and how it can enhance the mood of your image. Color is also important when considering black and white. Try and choose a subject that has fewer colors. For example; purple and green look great in color, but in black and white, they become unrecognizable. Therefore, it is important to choose a subject that is of interest and dramatic at the same time.

Nowadays, we are seeing resurgence in black and white photography. The demand for it is rife within the media sector, such as advertising, and print form. Even consumers who want timeless photographs of their weddings and various family occasions are using black and white photography.

Most well known photographers use this medium of photography especially for people photography. From early portrait photography in the 18th century, black and white photography has had a huge impact on the success of modern photography. British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron (June 11, 1815 – January 26, 1879) became well known for her images of celebrities of her time. Even though her career was short lived, 11 years to be precise, she did not show an interest in photography until she was given a camera at the age of 48 years old. She favoured the close crop style of portraiture, a style that is still very popular today.

It is true to say that black and white photography is timeless. It can literally stop time. We only have to take a look at Ansel Adams work of the American West. Even today his images are provoking in every sense as if they would’ve been taken yesterday.

Of course the use of black and white vs. color is a personal one, nevertheless, if it was not for the geniuses of the early part of the 16th century, we would not have been to capture time, of which is the essence.
